SPECIAL EVENING SESSION 6:30-8:30 PM

It might sound silly to say, but it’s true: most of writing is writing sentences.  If we’ve committed ourselves to writing, then shouldn’t we commit to discovering what we love about writing sentences?

In this class, we’ll focus on how to hold close to what—for you—makes a sentence sing.  After reviewing what a handful of brilliant writers have to say about language, rhythm, and style, we’ll discuss cutting “clutter” and adding “verve,” experiment with sonic and syntactical approaches to word choice, rethink sentence order and paragraphing, and shoot for sentences that evoke mystery, and at the same time, clarity.

You’ll leave class with practical composition- and revision-based methods for writing close to what’s interesting to you—for letting what you love about language lead you through your drafts.

Bio: Joseph Scapellato is the author of the novel, The Made-Up Man (2019), and the story collection, Big Lonesome (2017). He grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago and earned his MFA in Fiction at New Mexico State University. Joseph is an assistant professor of English in the creative writing program at Bucknell University, and lives in Lewisburg, PA, with his wife, daughter, and dog.
