How to Restrict Yourself (and Free Your Writing)

It seems like a contradiction, but the more restrictions we place on our writing, the more our imagination and word count can grow. We'll discuss how titles, plot, environment, and time can open opportunities to make discoveries about our stories, whether fiction or nonfiction. We’ll also investigate how self-doubt and censorship — our personal limitations — can work against us. This presentation will be interactive, putting these ideas into practice through writing exercises and discussion.

Scott Onak is a writer and teacher whose creative work has appeared in Mid-American Review, Willow Springs, and Quick Fiction, and whose book reviews appear on The Rumpus. He earned his MFA in Fiction at the University of Idaho and now serves as Program Curator at StoryStudio Chicago. Scott teaches creative writing at the University of Chicago Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies and works as a Writing Consultant at the City Colleges of Chicago. He received an artist residency in 2012 at the Ragdale Foundation and is currently revising a novel.

*Scott will not be accepting manuscripts at this time.
